Design of a hands free car telephony system

The customer
A leading Tier-1 Automotive component supplier in North America

The challenge

The client wanted to have a Hands-free car telephony system with very good audio quality (key factor for this design). Other than the technical challenges in terms of project management the customer division had no prior offshore outsourcing experience. Thus, they outsourced this design work to a local firm in the US.

Wipro came into consideration after quality of the audio from the product designed by the local firm was very poor which resulted in failure of the product.

Wipro had to not only revive the product but also do it in a much shorter time-span. The main technical problem was that the micro-controller chosen for the design was new, no prior experience existed in industry and the requirements were not completely frozen when the design started. This has made the design a very challenging design and time available for the design was also very limited. Apart from this several 3rd party software sub-systems were not ported on this particular micro-controller platform which had to be ported in a limited time frame.

The solution

Wipro took the complete ownership of the hardware design and development including board design, component selection, hardware diagnostics and boot loader development. Complete software development was also carried out in parallel at wipro, this included driver development for peripherals (e.g., UARTs, AC97 Codec, J1850, etc) and development of application software including user interface, call handling, voice tree etc.

Finally, wipro carried out a full System Integration of 3rd party software components for BT Stack and profiles, Voice recognition, Acoustic Echo Cancellation & Noise Suppression. In-car validation of the product was carried out for the client to ensure 100% quality & functionality acceptance.
