Networking Solutions Major: Addressing complex board designs as well as time to market concerns

The customer
The customer is a North American company providing networking solutions to major telecom carriers around the world.

The challenge
This project required the complete design & development of a very high end Dual Processor Board providing Ethernet Switching capabilities. Moreover since the customer intended to increase market share in the networking area by bringing out newer products with enhanced features before the competition, this development was to be completed within a very aggressive timeline.

The solution

The hardware was partitioned into two - one for the processing portion, and the other for the Ethernet switch portion.

Wipro was responsible from architecture to prototype test and validation of the Main Processor board as well as the Ethernet Switch daughter board, including the development of the bring-up code and the functional diagnostics. Wipro’s contribution can be classified based on the different phases of the project.

Design phase: Wipro was responsible for architecture design, component selection & detailed design, prototype test plan and test design.

Implementation phase: Wipro was responsible for implementation of these two boards along with the code bring up and diagnostics. The implementation constituted of the component library creation, schematic capture, board placement & routing, signal integrity analysis, timing analysis, and the coding for basic bring-up & diagnostics.

Test phase: Wipro was responsible for initial bring-up, the prototype testing and the design validation.

Technical highlights:
Dual Intel Xeon Processor based design with bus frequencies of 533 MHz
Hub Interface at 533 MHz
DDR SDRAM Interface at 266 MHz
64 bit PCI at 66MHz
Gigabit Ethernet and 10/100 Ethernet links
8 different voltages and associated power sequencing
22 layer controlled impedance PCB for processor board
More than 14000 pins, 10000 connections on processor board

The benefits

The initial board bring-up was completed within 24 hours of board available at lab. This enabled the customer’s software development team to start integration on the board much faster than expected and take the product to Beta earlier than anticipated.

Thus by demonstrating the ability to deliver a highly complex design with high quality while meeting the aggressive timelines, Wipro succeeded in ensuring that the customer’s product feature and time to market needs are met.
