Developing an optimized MPEG-1/2
video decoder for the Pentium MMX
The client
Our customer is a consumer electronics
giant.
The challenge
The company wanted to develop a MPEG-2 (ISO/IEC-13818-2)
Video decoder, Main Profile@Main Level in C++
and optimize it for the Pentium MMX instruction
set.
The solution
The Wipro team developed a solution
that offered the following features:
Some of the key features that were a part of the
implementation were:
MMX optimized for Pentium MMX range of
processors
Built as a Component Object Filter under
the DirectShow architecture for easy pluggability
Integrated the audio and video decoders
for real time playback (30 fps). The MPEG
-1 was real time on a Pentium 200 MHz machine
and the MPEG-2 video only decoder gave 18
frames/sec throughput on Pentium II 233
MHz machine.(This was not fully optimized)
The benefits
The synchronization
was achieved by the implementation of the synchronization
code on the lines that are required by the DirectShow
architecture. The Forward and reverse was achieved
through the DirectShow Stream Filter.
