Development of a common platform for integrating multiple laboratory equipments

The idea
Wipro developed a common platform for integrating multiple laboratory equipments as a LIMS solution and facilitated the reduction of total cost of ownership for the client

The client
A Leading North American Laboratory Equipment Manufacturer.

The business challenge
The existing laboratory equipments for the client were standalone in nature and lacked network enablement. The client needed to overcome this technology obsolescence and increase the market acceptability for the entire range of products. The client was looking to reduce the entire cost of maintenance and upgradation of the laboratory equipments by managing the operations of the different equipments through a central server. The entire LIMS solution being developed needed to be 21CFR Part 11 compliant.

Wipro’s solution

Wipro undertook entire development of a server that facilitated the creation of the LIMS solution compliant to 21 CFR Part 11. Different components of the LIMS solution developed by Wipro included client communication, user management, file versioning and configuration management, schedule management, script engine, unit communication and email manager. Complete board reengineering was done for form factor change and new interfaces were developed. Device driver upgradation was done and a test suite was developed for testing device drivers and other components. The system developed was compatible with Windows NT/2000/ XP. The solution allowed simultaneous connections to twenty operators performing sample analysis for five analyzers. In compliance to 21 CFR Part 11, the solution implemented had uniqueness of each combination of user ID and password, encryption / decryption of passwords along with computer generated, secured, time stamped audit trails for creation, deletion and modification of electronic records.

Business benefits
Reduced total cost of ownership
The entire management and upgradation cost was reduced due to the development and utilization of centralized server. It enabled the client to propose to its customer the differentiating factor of reduced cost of ownership for the entire system.

Increased throughput from laboratory equipments
Solution enabled for more amount of analysis to be done in parallel from the data gathered through the laboratory equipments thus increasing the throughput of the entire process.

Easier scalability
The solution developed enabled for easy scalability of the entire system as complete processing was done on the server with creation of thin clients. Hence adding new equipment and scaling up the system did not create significant obstacles.

Regulatory compliance
Wipro developed the entire solution as per the regulatory compliance facilitating early release of the product in market.

Decreased development time and cost
The entire solution developed by Wipro utilized our global delivery model and resulted in decreased time for development and reduced cost.
