Porting of iSCSI drivers to Solaris helps end-users achieve 43% cost reduction in network storage systems

The client
Our client is a leading storage infrastructure provider. It provides a complete suite of solutions that simplify storage deployments and allow organizations to meet their growing storage needs in terms of capacity, data protection and performance.

The challenge
To cater to its customer segment which was already using Solaris based computing platform infrastructure, the client wanted to develop a high quality iSCSI initiator driver for Solaris by porting its existing Linux iSCSI initiator driver. Performance of the newly ported driver was required to be on par with the existing Linux iSCSI initiator driver.

The solution

Wipro helped in porting of Linux based iSCSI initiator driver, configuration utility and Management Information Base (MIB) objects to Solaris using Solaris proprietary driver framework.

Design optimization
Performance bencmarking was done for the drivers at each stage of the developemnt. Optimization of the driver’s performance was done using methods like zero copying and efficient memory management. The IO meter benchmark offers insight into how fast an unformatted drive can handle data throughput in IOps (inputs/outputs per second). The Solaris driver had a throughput with IO meter of 70 MBytes/ sec for 1 LUN with NetApp utilization of 100 %.

Portable architecture
Wipro developed a common code framework so that the driver is independent of the version of Solaris Operating System and the driver can be easily ported to various versions of Solaris without much effort.

Quick turnaround
The ramp up of the team was done within 2 weeks and the solution was developed within a short span of 4 months.

Benefits
43% reduction in total cost of ownership (TCO)
50% more capacity utilization per storage device
Centralized storage management and Superior data protection
