Product enhancement for a database vendor

The customer
A large database vendor

The challenge
Extend the engineering capacity to do more features into the upcoming release
Some of features that needed to be provided include:
Provide a secure environment for database operations
Increasing table header size for the database engine
Random AMP sampling to improve query optimization
Distributed development and stiff deadlines.
Some of the technology areas were new to the customer.
The hardware and software resources that were required by the team were prohibitively expensive and there were lead times in procuring these resources offshore.

The solution
Demonstrated a prototype quickly for unfamiliar technologies to enhance knowledge and to reduce risks through better planning. This helped the customer gain confidence in the offshore team’s capability.
Used multisite clearcase for SCM and builds
Participated in the design ,development and implementation of the features and the feature test suites.
Project Management done centrally from customer site
Onsite technical staff to co-ordinate and quickly smoothen technical issue resolution
Invested in a separate team of developers to do Unit testing for complex optimizer feature.
Used high speed dedicated link to access the hardware and software resources onsite. This resulted in less investments by the customer, and helped in initiating the feature development quickly.
Used Six Sigma tools like Voice Of Customer (VOC) to capture implicit requirements and PUGH Matrix for evaluating design options. This helped in reducing the total effort and improve the quality of the deliverables. The capture of implicit requirements helped in uncovering new work items that would have resulted in schedule and effort overruns.
Developed a few tools, to analyze the product’s code base, to provide details of which portions of the code base will be impacted by a new feature. These tools helped in creation of test strategy, test plan and near accurate estimation of the feature development.
The offshore team got to speed on the product’s intricacies through daily FAQs circulated by onsite technical team and through a base certification training on the product’s architecture and code base.

The benefits
On time delivery of features to customers
Creation of technical people offshore to extend engineering capacity of the customer to provide for quick staffing.
Achieve quality feature enhancements at lower costs.
Offshore based Development and Test teams proximity increased productivity.
Use of centralized hardware and software resources helped in better managing the distributed feature development by teams across geographies. This resulted in better utilization of the resources.
