Wipro partners with leading European
Equipment vendor in current engineering of the BSC
The customer
Our client is one of the leading European Wireless
equipment and Mobile handset manufacturing vendor
having a wide customer base across Americas, Europe,
Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific, and China.
Our client has a market share of 12% in the worldwide
GSM/GPRS network infrastructure. Wipro has had
a successful and ongoing relationship with this
client for over 6 years in different telecom technologies.
The business need
The BSC product, of our client, had a wide customer
base and was contributing significant revenues
in Wireless portfolio. BSC is a key Network Element
of the Radio network. Any delay in the feature
enhancement releases of this product would delay
the entire network roll-out. Our client had to
choose a partner who could deliver the product
on time, with the highest quality and competitive
cost. Our client also needed a partner who could
sustain a relationship with their engineering
centers located across different continents.
The solution
The BSC is a complex
product with more than 3 million lines of code.
It was extremely crucial for Wipro to ramp up the
team to understand the product architecture and
to contribute to the new release in a short time
span. When introducing the new code, It was important
not to break the existing functionality.
As this product was jointly owned by Wipro and
the client’s engineering team, located across
different centers in different countries, it was
important for Wipro’s engineers to integrate
into the cultural diversity. Special cultural
training programs were organized in Wipro so that
the engineers could integrate with the diverse
cultures.
Wipro’s role in the product ownership in the
last four years includes:
Contribution
in defining the product road map
Involvement
in BSS and BSC system level specifications
and development. Wipro also participated in
Workshops conducted for various features where
experts from different engineering centers
interact.
Complete ownership
of BSC Simulator, all Local terminals and
tools
BSC level system testing
for some of the features/enhancements
Bug fix of BSS Subsystem
Review of BSS Subsystem
level documents
Complete re-engineering
of the Local Terminal to enhance the GUI and
to increase the stability
Analysis/fixing of FRs
reported from field and validation centers
Joint ownership of CM [Configuration
Management], PM [Performance Management] and
FM [Fault Management] domains with client
Complete ownership of Layer3
towards the MS (Radio Resource Management
and Radio Resource Control) and GPRS functionality
(Packet Transmission Path Setup in BSC)
End customer support (GSM
service provider) by working with the client’s
team for Level3 support
When the client decided to move the entire BSC
engineering activity from their established engineering
center to a newly formed engineering center, the
product expertise transfer was done by Wipro.
Quick ramp
up of resources - flexible technical manpower
Wipro
team ramped up in a short time with
a well planned transfer of information
(executed by both Wipro and Client teams)
to handle this complex product
Successful reverse knowledge
transfer to the new client site
2 BSC releases with offshore
cost advantage
No impact
on the releases done by the client,
before Wipro’s ownership of the
product.
Wipro team demonstrated
the ability to work across different cultures
and make the releases happen on time
A stable and quality relationship
for the client for a flagship product.
