Multimediation solution for GSM, GPRS, fixed, international gateway and value added services

The client

Our Client is one of the largest GSM telecom providers, operating a GSM900/1800 digital mobile network in Malaysia, offering mobile postpaid and prepaid telephony. The Client operates a domestic fixed-line network and an international gateway that offer voice and data services to business customers, in support of the mobile business.

The business need
To take advantage of emerging market dynamics, our client required to provide a common platform for mediation that can process CDR types from its multi-vendor and multi-technology networks including GPRS, GSM, PSTN, IGW and VAS network nodes. Such a platform would also enable distribution of the processed data to various downstream applications like IN messaging gateway, Billing server, Data warehouse, Fraud Management Server and Reporting server. Long term benefits include access to real-time information, control of information regarding revenue leakage and recovery of the same.

How Wipro helped
Wipro developed a complete End to End multi-mediation system using Ericsson Multi Mediation version BMP 5.0 system on the HPUX 11i platform, to provide the following solutions:
End to End implementation for all GPRS, GSM, International Gateway, Fixed and Value Added Services
Interfacing with network elements from Nortel, Ericsson, Motorola, Siemens
Distribution to Billing, Fraud, Data warehouse, reporting and archive server
Requirements and Business Analysis
Interface Design
Development and Customization
Unit and Integration Testing
System Testing and Acceptance Testing

High Availability Solution

Key features
Implementation of separate Collection, Processing and Distribution modules in EMM ver BMP for each service provisioned, to ensure modularity and load sharing between nodes
Each Collection, Distribution or Processing module kept as modular as possible by distribution of functionality between the applicable nodes. This also ensured load sharing in the processing nodes.
• High Availability (HA) implementation thus ensuring the flow of Mediation operations in case of a single point of hardware failure or in case of software failure. Both systems reside on one server each, in a load sharing mode. In case of a Failover, the failed system is migrated to the other server, and continues normal operation.
Common configuration settings
Implementation of business rules done using TCL scripts in EP-TCL nodes of EMM ver BMP
Handling of change in number of bytes during collection of CDR data from a Windows m/c using ASCII mode of transfer
Validations required during collection of CDR data from network elements implemented through shell scripts which execute before the CDR data is sent for business rule validations in the Processing module
Distribution functions provided by means of FTP mechanisms executed through shell scripts, as per additional requirements of the client
Database response optimizations incorporated by means of Indexes and Tables Spaces
Recovery mechanisms provided during Collection, Distribution and Processing functions, for CDR data which fail collection, distribution or database lookup during processing. Collection and Distribution recovery provided by means of shell scripts, and Processing recovery provided by a separate job which is activated by a shell script
Common distribution modules used during normal flow and recovery flow of CDR data in modules
Foresight involved in analyzing the various rollover scenarios for CDR sequence numbers and database content
Type of Alarm messages sent to the BOS Alarm Interface or standard BMP error log standardized amongst the mediation modules
Clean up of tables as per user configuration

Measurable business benefits
Customized Revenue leakage reporting through reports for missing gap CDR files and rejected CDRs. This helped the customer identify the list of files missed during collection / distribution and also identify the reasons for CDR level rejection
Simplified Recovery mechanism to ensure Revenue Assurance. The recovery procedures were developed for CDR files that failed collection from network elements and distribution to various downstream applications. Recovery procedures for CDR level processing could reprocess the rejected data thereby ensuring revenue assurance
Customized reporting module for user level reports
Training to the client in EMM ver BMP 5.0 and the customized implementation solution; to enable smooth knowledge transfer
Designing and deploying EMM ver BMP 5.0 components in a HA environment ensuring that the system is available at all times
Customized Bulk and Automatic recovery procedures for rejected CDRs and files
