From propreitory hardware/OS to standard hardware/OS for BSC
 
 
The client

Our client is one of the leading European Wireless equipment and Mobile handset manufacturing vendor having a wide customer base across Americas, Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific, and China. Our client has a market share of 12% in the worldwide GSM/GPRS network infrastructure. Wipro has had a successful and ongoing relationship with this client for over 4 years in different technologies.

 
The business need
The BSC platform did not allow major feature enhancements due to saturated memory/processor/communication capacity. in Addition to this, there were a set of internal software restrictions that prevented product enhancements. To overcome these serious limitations and to stay competitive in the BSC market, our client decided to migrate to a multi-standard common platform for supporting GSM, GPRS and 3G on the existing BSC solution. The requirement was to develop and port the BSC application software on to the new hardware and OS with minimal impact on existing application software. Our client wanted a solution which could eliminate the effort of customizing the BSC applications for different platforms, in future releases of the BSC.
 
How Wipro helped
Our client’s BSC product is complex with more than 3 million lines of code. This BSC is a multi-processor system, based on boards with Intel 386 processors, with limited memory size and processing speed. The solution was to move on to a standard platform with the following advantages:
High processor speed
Smaller rack size
Standardized High speed internal communication mechanism
Standardized operating system
Standardized platform
Standardized platform management system

Wipro approached this problem by designing a virtual-OS (VOS) layer which simulated the proprietary OS. The VOS is a layer between the standard OS and the existing BSC software. This solution envisaged very minimal changes in the BSC application software. Wipro demonstrated the capability of this VOS through a prototype, which gave the client confidence to go ahead with this design.

Wipro’s solution of the VOS marked the BSC software from the following changes:
Replacement of multiple older hardware boards with a single new high performance boards
Communication between multiple high performance boards
Communication between BSC and other sub-systems
The operating system change

The existing BSC software did not functionality split the user and control plane in a proper manner. Wipro re-designed the BSC software in order to functionally split the user plane and control plane without changing the BSC subsystem’s functionality. The BSC software was also modified in such a way that, the hardware changes were not visible outside the BSC sub-system.

Wipro was completely responsible from specification to testing of terminals (OMC Simulator and trace terminal) to provide better capability and features involving the IP connectivity with the BSC

The Fault Management Capability has been redesigned to take care of new hardware.
