Case Study

A highly optimized speech codec is developed for a fixed point processor for VoIP applications

The customer

Our customer is a leading telecom vendor.

The challenge

The project involved the development of a highly optimized ITU G.728 LD-CELP speech codec for a TMS320C62x fixed point DSP processor for VoIP applications. There were stringent specifications on MCPS and Memory usage. Peak MCPS of 16(goal as 14.5), 40Kbyte of program memory and 2.2Kbyte+6Kbyte*N data memory were the specifications given by the customer.

The solution

The project was executed successfully by a team of 4 Wipro engineers in 5 months, drawing on our experience in speech, audio and video codec development. We developed a codec that supports TI XDAIS (Express DSP Algorithm Implementation Standard), is fully interruptible and a Bit exact implementation of ITU G.728 Annex G.

This codec boasts of a 2.07 performance improvement factor over the best implementation on TMS320C54x. The project was completed without delay. The codec has been successfully tested for the Stack and Scratch Memory contamination test and Tone Detection (DTMF) test. It has also passed the Interrupt test.
