J2EE migration and enhancement of Graphical Local Craft Terminal (GLCT)

The client
One of the world's leading Electronics companies

Challenge
Business: Meet the timelines of the customer as this project deliverables were linked to releases of a related product by Wipro's customer
Project management:
The customer had given aggressive deadlines to meet
Both migration and enhancement had to be done in parallel so that the final deliverable had migration as well as enhancements done
Technical: Customer had only source code and a few process diagrams as documentation. Wipro had to gain knowledge of the existing GLCT by going through the source code and these few diagrams
Deployment: Customer was not willing to invest in Infrastructure

Solution
Business: Through a mixture of right resource induction into the project and efficient management of customer/project the timeline were achieved
Project management:
All activities of each milestone were thoroughly tracked and informed to customer. Weekly reports were given to track each milestone
Formed two core teams with a technical lead for each one of them. One team look after the Migration portion and other team looked after the enhancements
Technical: The team analyzed and documented the compatibility issues of J2SE versus the older version viz. JDK 1.1.8. Then source code porting of GLCT from JDK 1.1.8 to J2SE was done. All the deprecated methods in the old version of JDK 1.1.8 was replaced with new version APIs of the J2SE
Deployment: Network element hardware was not provided by the customer at offshore for testing. Hence unit testing, system testing had to be done using a network element simulator which was developed by Wipro for the same customer as a part of an earlier relationship with that customer. Thorough testing was done at offshore using the simulator which minimized defects during acceptance testing phase performed at onsite on the actual network elements
