Element management system gateway on TMF 814 framework for optical network elements

The client
Leading North American equipment vendor.

Problem
Due to the economic slowdown the company was looking at cutting costs. They were looking for outsourcing partners for implementing the new features in the product.
The gateway module needed expansion as more and more customers had started integrating the EMS application with their OSS and subsequently asking for more features.

Project challenges
The gateway team had to directly work in the on-going release for developing some features when the team was initially being setup
Due to specialized skill requirements, finding the right resources was a challenge for Wipro as it was for the customer. The requirements for more resources are of immediate nature
There were very few people who knew about the gateway modules
The customer did not mandate the quality processes and did not estimate for them

Solution
Gateway team learnt about the Element Management System, the TMF 814 interfaces and the development procedures followed quickly for successfully delivering the assigned tasks
Wipro had buffered suitable candidates and gave some exposure to the modules where the resource requirements were likely to come up
Wipro took ownership of the two modules. This extended to the developing features & bug fixing in the entire modules
Wipro engineers stretched to follow the quality norms

Benefits
Wipro Gateway team had worked on fault, configuration, performance & security interfaces and overall added 28 new APIs in a span of 3 releases of the product. Most of these APIs were supported for more than 4 different types of Network Elements (NEs). These APIs were either TMF 2.0 defined or custom defined for some specific requests from customers
Apart from the new APIs mentioned above, new NE type ,a new NE release support for the existing APIs and new parameter support in the existing APIs were done by Wipro for the 3 releases of the product. The existing APIs supports were extended to about 10 new versions of NEs by the Wipro team. About 46 APIs were modified by the Wipro team to add new functionality into the APIs
Wipro team  implemented the upcoming TMF concept "FTP" to model the termination points that did not fall under standard PTP & CTP models that are defined in TMF 2.0. About 20 APIs supported by the product use this concept now

Other business/Technical benefits
There was a very good response from the customers of the product who had been using the gateways for integrating with their OSS applications. Some customers  started using it even without a single issue and even without contacting the support team even once.
