The network management systems are more standards based and non-proprietary. Their primary task is to facilitate operations at the network level, handling FCAPS functionalities.

Operation support systems and business support systems help in automating the operations support and business support processes. There is a trend to make these systems open standards based.

Today's networks comprise of multi-vendor, multi-technology and multi-generation devices and systems. This raises the issue of inter-operability of many-to-many devices/systems.
