The Client

The client is a European telecom equipment manufacturer and a global leader

 
The challenge

The project involved terabit router development for the client. The stringent schedules were to be met without compromising on quality parameters such as effort and in-process defect detection. Wipro was expected to participate in all aspects of the product from management software development to hardware development. The challenges were to be met in multi-site development environment (the client was developing some of the modules and doing the system testing) and amidst a large team size.

 
Wipro solution

The development started at the client’s site around April 1999 with a clear mandate to come out with the first release of the product by end 2000 as time to market was a very critical parameter. The product was first demonstrated successfully at Supercomm in June 2000. Subsequently it has figured regularly in shows such as ISPCon 2000, Cebit 2001 and SuperComm 2002. Wipro continues to be a development partner in a relationship which is going strong for the past 3 years.

Wipro showcased its expertise in the following area
OAM area – The activities span across SNMP sub-agents, board level modules and the Hardware Shielding Level (HSL) from Top Level Design to Integration Testing
IP Management – Herein the activities have primarily been in the Sub Agent, CLI development and Web Interface development, again from Top Level Design to Integration Testing
Hardware Dependent Software – Wipro has been involved in development of hardware sub-systems of the router
System Offline Test (SOFLT) – These include Board Specific tests, Network tests, Interconnection tests, Clock tests, Hub manageability and maintenance tests, Switch matrix tests, Traffic tests and GUI development
Hardware – Wipro’s contribution lay in the design, development and verification of complex boards that encompassed four main subsystems

Wipro's contribution towards the terabit router project is a clear example of how Wipro's core strengths - process, technical expertise, project management skills have all been integrated successfully towards meeting the client expectations in a large time critical, multi-site, multi-team development project.
