The challenge

The customer’s main challenge was to stay competitive in the DSLAM product market while continuing to support and enhance its existing DSLAM range of products. The existing product had to keep up with the latest technological advancement in xDSL technology and also comply with standards like TR-048. And all this had to be done at reduced development and production cost of DSLAM cards.

Now, to constantly innovate and create next generation DSLAM products, it was imperative that their engineering expertise be migrated to the design of the newer products. At the same time it was necessary for the customer to reduce the cost of maintenance and support to its existing customers.

 
The solution
To overcome this challenge, Wipro recommended taking up the complete ownership of the product. The team at Wipro took the ownership of the various subgroups in the departments of Software Engineering, Hardware Engineering, System Integration Testing, Hardware Integration testing and Engineering Technical Assistance Centre. To expedite this process of complete ownership, an Offshore Development Center (ODC) with a lab was set up at Wipro. Wipro successfully managed the challenges in the transition of ownership which were quick transfer of knowledge, putting in place quality processes to ensure high levels of productivity, understanding the pain-areas of end-customers and bringing product stability within a span of 10 months. The entire exercise of product ownership transition was planned and completed in a phase wise manner. The transition phases were:
Knowledge Transfer / Transfer of Information Phase
Offshore Development Facility Setup Phase
DSLAM Lab Set up Phase
Maintenance and Enhancements Phase
