Platform migration of an automotive body electronics system

Our client
Leading tier-1 automotive supplier, headquartered in the US, and whose customers include the world's largest vehicle manufacturers

The challenge
The business challenge for our client started from the moment the decision was taken to globalize their software development. Choosing the most preferred suppliers during competitive bidding through reverse auction, while also ensuring the technical competencies of the suppliers was another challenge. On the technical front a micro module had to be changed to replace the existing microcontroller family with a more cost-effective micro (referred herein as "New Micro"). This required that the existing micro-based software be converted to the New Micro equivalent and the expertise for this was not available with the client under the given time frame. The chosen supplier had to take complete responsibility of the embedded software development including validation testing.

The solution

The development team from Wipro took responsibility for converting the existing micro-based software to the New Micro equivalent starting from scoping, requirements gathering and systems study. Changes to hardware peripheral components were carried out as necessary in order to support the change to the New Micro. The input/output and peripheral software drivers had to be modified or newly created to support hardware circuit changes. The 4 wheel drive control module of this body electronics sub-system was successfully migrated to the new microprocessor without altering the functionality.

In-depth analysis of the existing system to perform the migration and exhaustive testing to address all possible operation scenarios were carried out. The main highlight was the defect free module performance for the essential functionality when tested on the vehicle for the first time itself thus cutting down the delivery cycle time.

The fact that Wipro was awarded the project in the face of stiff competition reflects the confidence that clients place in our processes and domain knowledge. The client benefited from Wipro's ability to deliver a cost effective solution meeting budgetary considerations within the aggressive project schedule.
