Case Study

A traffic information system is integrated into a telematics application to provide drivers with updated information.

Our client
International automotive electronics vendor involved in the design and production of high-tech components and systems for the automotive industry

The challenge

The customer wished to incorporate a traffic information system into its telematics applications model. To ensure standardization of output, the data blocks have a defined structure and followed a standard specification. The received data is processed and presented to the HMI layer, from where the user is able to control, manipulate and employ the information provided. These involved integrating different systems and modules along with the expertise in enabling technologies.

The solution

The Wipro team implemented an interactive traffic telematics application with GSM-SMS as the bearer network and WDP (WAP ver 1.1) as the datagram protocol.

The traffic telematics application runs inside the head unit of an in-car optical multi media network. The link to the external world is a GSM unit, which is another element on the optical network. Once the user sends a request for information, the service provider responds with updated traffic information, sent out as blocks of data.

For both sending and receiving, datagrams were created using WDP and sent using GSM-SMS as the bearer. The information flow facilitated by the applications was presented in an extremely user-friendly fashion.

Using this system, drivers could request service providers for information on traffic conditions on specific routes.

Wipro's contribution to enabling technologies such as WDP provided the crucial technical expertise that the client required. Usage of sound software engineering practices for rapid prototyping reduced the project development time, there by shortening the end-product development cycle time.
